Many people believe that bodycon stands for body-contoured because this is what the dress actually does. That is to say, it is designed to be contoured to your body. However, the name of the dress is actually short for body conscious. While these dresses are some of the tightest on the market they are also typically rather on the short side, with a hemline that rests somewhere around the thigh area.

Because of the bodycon’s brutal design to show off the body it cannot be judges as the perfect dress for everyone out there. But this doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to have the figure of a model either to rock this style. In actual fact, those best suited to the bodycon have an hourglass body type – equal bust to hip ratio, going in at the waist. This is largely owing to the stretchy tight fabric of the dress, which really flatters those with curves. Bodycon dresses can also be low cut at the neck, which is why bigger busts can work the dress better than those with smaller busts.

For this reason, waif like women will see that the bodycon isn’t what they are after. In the same way, pear figures, that’s hips that are bigger than busts, will need to avoid this dress. Never forget that it’s impossible to conceal your body behind this dress. A woman with a pear-shaped figure will therefore find that a bodycon dress highlights her bottom and will make her bust look disproportionately smaller by comparison.

Now, even if you are an hourglass figure, there are still a myriad of ways a bodycon can be worn to fit the image you’re wanting to sell. But look out, because there are also a number of traps to avoid! To illustrate, several online chain stores offer a range of bodycon that have cutouts to provide a bit of variety to this fashion. Examine where the cutouts appear and which body parts you would possibly end up flashing. If you have got a toned stomach, cutouts of the side of the dress can also add a little bit of sassiness, although as you can imagine you’ll find this more suited for any dancing the night away as opposed to a corporate environment. There are also many varieties with cutouts along the back, including with overlapping straps. Great for women with shapely shoulders and a slice of refinement.

Alternatively, if you’re a keen dress fan who wants to make the most of your great pins, while looking well turned-out in the office, go with a slash or u neck style without any embellishment and pair with a cardigan. Bear in mind that the more supple and finer the material used in the dress, the more of your bodyshape will be evident. So for simple elegance that flatters, you should try designs with ribs or panells.
